Chaminade University of Honolulu is a private coeducational university in Honolulu, which is the capital and the most populous CDP in the US state of Hawaii, with a population estimated at a number of more than 371 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. Honolulu is the only incorporated city in Hawaii, its metropolitan area, known as the City and County, having more than 900 000 inhabitants, living within its limits, fact which makes it the 57th-largest metropolitan area in USA.
Chaminade was founded in 1955, by the Society of Mary, which is a Roman Catholic religious order, also known under the name of the Marianists, and it was named after Father William Joseph Chaminade, a French Catholic priest who survived persecution during the French Revolution. Today, Chaminade University of Honolulu has an enrollment approximated at a total number of nearly 3000 students, and offers educational programs in various fields of study, at various degree levels, including bachelor's and master's degrees in the major arts and sciences subjects, focusing primarily in areas such as communication, business, criminal justice, forensic science, education, interior design, and religious studies degree programs.
Chaminade's athletic teams are known as the Silverwords, who compete in NCAA Division II, as members of the Pacific West Conference, in various sports, including in men's and women's soccer and women's basketball, which were added for the first time in the fall of 2006. The name of the teams - Silverwords - is a reference to a Hawaiian fern prized for its beauty and ability to withstand harsh conditions. Their distinctive colors are blue, white and silver.
Every year, Chaminade hosts the men's Maui Invitational Tournament, in which the Silverwords are usually the only team that competes in the tournament that is not a NCAA Division 1 basketball program.
